Fairways to Greens

Herewith a brief spiel from the Greens & Fairways Committee.

Hello Member

As the rains promise to arrive in abundance, this will be a glorious welcome. A respite from the heat and a notable relief for all the plants, new trees and wildlife.

Whilst we use the term relief, the welcome rains also bring about a few conditions for the course and players:

A few scenarios come to the fore:

1: due to wet conditions numerous balls will be found to be embedded (PLUGGED BALL):

This is amply covered by the Rules: Rule 25-2

“ if a players ball is embedded in any closely-mown area through the green, it may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green.

Note:!!! A ball “Embedded” when it is in its own pitch-mark and a ball does not necessary have to touch the soil/ground to be embedded.”

Closely mown area means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

It is however advisable for all players to check the notice board for any LOCAL RULES THAT the HANDICAP AND COMPITITIONS COMMITTEE may put out to allow other relief options or conditions.

2: mud on ball: Check to see if any local rules are placed on the boards to qualify or allow relief options.

3: As the possibility of muddy shoes and carts/equipment all players are respectfully requested to attempt to prevent this unwanted mud and foreign seeds from the mud being wiped or transported onto the green. If possible clean off whatever mud possible before going onto the greens.

4: Casual water will be present through the green: This is amply covered by RULE 25:1

We challenge all members and players to read up on this rule as it may apply especially during this wet season. We ask you a question….does casual water include your stance and swing… read up your rules and avoid penalties

Nearest Point of Relief

Question 1: A player’s ball lies in casual water, as above. Where is the nearest point of relief from which they may drop their ball within one club-length; A, B, C or D;

  1. a) if they are right-handed?
  2. b) if they are left-handed?

Answer: a) Point A, b) Point C.

Points B and D are nearer the hole then where the ball is at rest. Point C cannot be the nearest point of relief for a right-handed player, as they would still have to take their stance in casual water. Similarly, point A for a left-handed player.

The player may drop their ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. The ball may be cleaned when lifted under this Rule. If a ball to be dropped or placed under this Rule is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted.

Remember to love your course and look after it, repair divots, pitch marks and avoid at all costs litter.

That’s all from the G&F Team

Notice on The Greens Project

The Board has resolved that the proposed Greens Project will be ratified by members at the Annual General Meeting in March 2017. This will give the trial greens enough time to grow to enable members to choose/see the best of the two types of grass planted.

If the project is approved by members @ The AGM there is a prominent corporate organization who is willing to partner the club in sponsoring the project.
